The Benefits of MMA for Children

Self-defence and Confidence

As children learn new techniques and overcome challenges, they gain a strong sense of accomplishment and self-worth.

Humility and Respect

One of the critical components of any martial art is learning how to be humble and respectful in both victory and defeat. As part of a team of martial artists, our students learn the importance of their own achievements and that of their teammates.

Fitness

Martial arts gets us off the sofa and encourages us to be more physically active and gain new skills at the same time as being social with our teammates. MMA is a full body workout which can not only improve fitness but has mental health benefits too.

Resilience & Mental Toughness

Through practice and sparring, our students learn how to face adversity, deal with setbacks, and keep trying.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is MMA?

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a combat sport that combines striking, grappling, and ground fighting techniques from various martial arts disciplines around the world. Those studying MMA are taught to use both striking (such as punches, kicks) and grappling (including submissions and takedowns) while standing and on the ground in competitive or defensive situations.
MMA is one of the world’s fastest growing sports growing notoriety through large promotions such as UFC, Cagewarriors and ONE Championship.

There is a common misconception that MMA is an aggressive sport. MMA is a combination of martial arts styles and provides a effective framework for self-defence situations; students are taught a range of techniques to be able to defend themselves on their feet or on the ground.

What will my child learn?

Our classes comprise of two elements, striking and grappling. Striking includes fundamentals such as footwork, establishing a good guard, punches and kicks from standing or from the ground. Grappling includes takedowns and submissions. Our lead instructor, an experienced mixed martial artist, will teach effective striking and grappling techniques taken from boxing, kickboxing, karate, wrestling and brazilian jiu-jitsu.

How do I enrol my child?

Use our contact page or send an email toΒ  connor@hayesmma.co.uk to request a free trial session. Following the trial, if your child wishes to enrol, you will be charged Β£7.00 for each Tuesday in the half term in advance. If your child no longer wants to continue their classes, you don’t have to commit beyond the half term.

What does my child need to bring with them to class?

Clothing: Students should wear sports clothing without zips or buttons as these could catch on other students during the grappling element of the class.

Mouthguard: For our live drills and sparring, students must ensure they have a mouthguard with them. A mouthguard is like a crash helmet for teeth and gums in the event of any accidents.

Groin guard: For our male students we strongly advise that a groin guard is worn throughout the class.

Gloves & Shin Pads: Gloves are provided but we understand some students would prefer to bring and use their own gloves from home. The weight of the glove will depend very much on the size and weight of your child, generally children should be using 6-8oz and adults upwards from 12oz; please speak to our Lead Instructor for more information. Shin pads are advisable for competitive sparring rounds.

A drink! It’s important to stay hydrated, there will be plenty of opportunities throughout the class to grab a drink.

Where are the classes held?

Tuesday after school sessions are held in the Lee Chapel Primary School Lunch / Assembly Hall.
